Flavio Boltro, trumpet

Flavio Boltro was born in Torino on 5th May 1961. His father was a trumpeter and a great jazz fan. He started learning the trumpet when he was nine, and at the age of 13 he started having lessons with Carlo Arfenego (trumpet player in the Torino Symphony Orchestra) once a week. The following year his father asked the teacher to privately prepare Flavio to enroll at the Conservatory, where Flavio studied for the next seven years. After graduation, his life was marked by two decisive moments, meeting two music formations offering him with the opportunity to introduce himself and gain acknowledgement. The first of them was LINGOMANIA, led by Mauricio Gianmarco. This musician already had a quartet, but wanted to transform it into a quintet. After he met Flavio the famous quintet was born with Roberto Gato, drums, Furio Di Kastri, double bass, Giamarco, saxophonist, Umberto Fiorentino, guitar and Flavio on the trumpet. This band, acoustic in the matrix and electric in its sonority, presented an innovation in those years and accomplished great success in Italy, winning the Best Record Award and the title of the Best Band for two years in a row. When this adventure was started, and it lasted for two years, Flavio was 25. At the same time he began receiving different offers for collaboration especially from Steve Grossman, who he joined in performances in a number of clubs, but at international festivals as well with the quintet with Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins and David Williams in the rhythm section. Before his collaboration with LINGOMANIA ended, he played with Clifford Jordan and Jimmy Cobb. He also had two concerts with Freddie Hubbard besides the ones at the Umbria Jazz, in Torino and Milan. The other crucial formation was the trio he formed together with Manu Roche on drums and Furio Di Kastri, double bass. At that time there was no other trio consisting of the trumpet, double bass and drums, so they made a huge success. In the third year of its existence the trio grew into a quartet when Joe Lovano joined them. They had 12 concerts on the Italian tour. In 1994 Laurent Cugny took over the leadership of ONJ looking after a trumpeter and saxophonist. Flavio Boltra and his childhood friend Stefano Di Battista were his choices. A year before his collaboration with ONJ ended, Falvio became a member of the Michele Petruchianni Sextet. Flavio Boltro, Stefano Di Batisti and Eric Legnini, who had been friends for many years, looked for two musicians to make a quintet for a long time. They actualized their project in 1997 when Benjamin Henocq on drums and Rosario Bonakorso on bass joined them. The new band, the Stefano Di Batisti/Flavio Boltro quintet, has been very successful since 1998. The Quintet still exists, even though Stefano and Flavio started working in other directions as well.

The band was formed in 1994 following the idea of Argentinean saxophonist and composer Javier Girotto who, being inspired by his own musical roots and reaffirming them in an expressive manner typical of jazz, created a new musical field. Explicitly relying on the music of the great Astor Piazzolla, the ensemble Aires Tango has reached the repertoire of original music in a progressive evolution, due to both the nature of improvisation and a continual change of music material. In 1995 the band performed music for the theatrical play 'Witnesses' (featuring Gianmarco Tognazzi and Alessandro Gassman), and recorded music for the film 'Bandits' (by Mignucci) featuring Ben Gazzara and Lumi Cavazos. In 1996 Aires Tango released their first discography work, entitled 'Malvinas' after the Argentinean name for the Falkland Islands. By the end of 1997, they released their second CD 'Madres' (BMG-Victor), continuing the style of the first album. (In regard to this release, the string quartet and participation of accordion player Antonello Salis are worth mentioning). Since 1998 the ensemble Aires Tango has participated in a large number of music festivals all over the peninsula, among which are the Mediterranean Sounds (Rumori Mediterranei) in Roccella Ionica, the Nuoro Jazz Festival and the Fano Jazz where they shared the evening with the Astor Piazzolla - Gary Burton Band. At concerts they have been joined by soloists: Paolo Freso, Enrico Rava, Gianni Coscia, Antonello Salis and Peppe Servillo from Avion Travel. In spring 1999 their third album ('Poemas') was released, dedicated to the contemporary Hispano-American literature. Their fourth CD ('20th Century Chronology') was released in October 2000 in co-production with the discography label of the newspaper 'Il Maifesto'.
The music of Aires Tango merges segments of tango melodies with the jazz improvisation in an impressive way. The result is a kind of adapted tango, with a distinct Latino features in melody and rhythm, but less bound by the traditional tango canons thus presenting fertile soil for improvisations with jazz inspiration; in this way the band succeeds in creating music of noticeable expressive freedom and great charm, in which the echoes of the past merge with the solutions of the most modern jazz expression.
